Visiting Every Last Station

The Intrepid Man Behind 'Every Last Station' Visits Every Last Station On The Heart of Wales Line

At the end of February early March, Stuart from Every Last Station visited the Heart of Wales Line with the ultimate goal to visit every station, edging closer to his quest to visit Every Last Station in Britain.

His mission started in January 2018 and is simple; visit EVERY station in England, Wales and Scotland. Some would think this is a simple albeit long task BUT Stuart has some very specific rules for a station to count as being visited, which makes his aim even more challenging:

  1. Board or alight at every station. NO hoping off and on the train.
  2. A photo must be taken of the station.

All we can say is the itinerary he sent us must have involved some serious planning. Over the space of 6 days Stuart managed to visit every station on the Heart of Wales Line including Sugar Loaf, which was this year's winner in his Twitter champions league #MostLikedLeastUsed station in Britain. This interactive map shows you more information about the stations we were up against.

So why do it you might ask? For Stuart visiting stations is a way of visiting places and given that there are many lines where the next train doesn't arrive for hours there is plenty of opportunity to explore the surroundings.

When we met up with Stuart on his 3rd day travelling the line he had visited 2,470 stations with 106 stations to go. On this particular day Stuart was fortunate to be on the same train which was hosting TV presenter Sean Fletcher who was filming for ITV Wales Coast and Country (you can find out more about this here). He introduced himself and seized the opportunity to be interviewed about his challenge. We really hope he made the 'final cut'.

Stuart's final station will be in Scotland but the date is top secret so if you want to keep up to date follow his journey on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. Community Rail Officer, Richard greeted Stuart at Llangynllo railway station which was his final alight on the Heart of Wales Line. It was an absolute pleasure to meet Stuart and we would like to take this opportunity to thank him for visiting not only the stations on our line but on all lines across Britain.  He's taken on an immense challenge which has not been made easy with the disruptions to service as a result of Covid, however his perseverance is a true testament to sustainable travel and tourism. We even received our very own memento of his travels and some exclusive tickets...I wonder where they would take us?

And what will be his next challenge? Well, we're not allowed to tell you BUT what we do know is that it will be a big one and will hopefully raise a lot of money for Samaritans, a charity close to his heart. See why by reading his very moving blog 'Hey, you alright pal?'

Members of the local community at Cynghordy near Llandovery came together earlier this month to celebrate the unveiling of a blue plaque at the iconic Cynghordy viaduct, which forms part of the acclaimed Heart of Wales railway line. The plaque was funded by Llanfair-ar-y-Bryn community council, and unveiled at the event by Cefin Campbell MS, Plaid Cymru Member of the Senedd for Mid & West Wales. The unveiling was chaired by Handel Davies, County Councillor for Llandovery with fellow members of Llanfair-ar-y-bryn community council as well as representatives from Network Rail and Heart of Wales Line Development Company also present.

So much for me writing monthly missives detailing what I have been up to in my role as Community Rail Officer. This is my first one since the end of January as it has been a very busy period over the last few months. This has been due to two projects that were finishing off, and also some end of financial year reporting to enable us gain accreditation from the Community Rail Network. I am pleased to announce we passed the accreditation process, with some very positive comments on our future plans from Transport for Wales, Community Rail Network, Network Rail and Avanti West Coast, who provide our funding. February started with 3 meetings in 3 days in Llanwrtyd Wells, Llanelli and Shrewsbury to promote the opportunity to join the Community Rail Partnership. These were very well attended and there was a lot of enthusiasm from the communities we met to engage with the railway positively on future projects. There were lots of ideas coming out at the meetings and we will have a strong partnership meeting for the first time at the end of April, with representation from all over the geographical area of the line, and from many different sectors.

Transport For Wales have announced changes for the new train timetables that will come into force in December 2024. Amongst the proposed changes are adjustments to the Heart of Wales Line service. This includes a reduction from 5 to 4 services a day from Monday to Saturday, there will be no change to the Sunday service . There is also a planned removal of the shorter evening services from Shrewsbury to Llandrindod and from Swansea to Llandovery. The timings have also changed and the trains will pass at Llandrindod Wells railway station to allow for a better passenger service.
